MEET THE SPEAKERS

Jerry Botha – Managing Partner at Tax Consulting SA

Jerry has over 20 years’ experience in the field of taxation, holds his own FSCA License, is a Master Reward Practitioner and serves on the Executive Board of the South African Reward Association (“SARA”), Chairs the SARA Employee Benefit Committee, and is a Certified Payroll Practitioner and Tax Practitioner. He is the managing partner of South Africa’s largest independent tax practice, enjoys presenting and is passionate about tax and international individuals. He has also authored the Lexis Nexis “Expatriate Tax” textbook, as critically acclaimed by Judge Dennis Davis.

Thomas Lobban – Legal Manager, Cross-Border Taxation at Tax Consulting SA

Thomas holds an LLB and LLM Tax Law degree and is a SARS registered tax practitioner in South Africa, with both practical tax and consulting experience. He has dealt with various legal conflicts of interest and moved from corporate practice to the consulting industry where he has entrenched himself within tax law, specializing in individual cross-border and crypto asset taxation. Thomas joined Tax Consulting SA after obtaining his Masters degree, to focus on tax law and the intricacies thereof. He is a co-author of the LexisNexis Expatriate Tax textbook, and in particular its chapter on the interpretation and application of Double Taxation Agreements, which is of particular relevance to South Africans living and working abroad.

Darren-Britz Darren Britz – Head of Tax Legal at Tax Consulting SA

Darren holds a BA Law and LLB degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa, specialising in employee mobility and tax administration. He heads up the tax legal, consisting of tax attorneys and associates with their own expertise. Darren’s experience includes advising companies across a broad range of industries on their payroll tax and international tax consequences. He is also a leading expert in advising clients in their expansion into Africa.

Keith-Engel Keith Engel – CEO at South African Institute of Taxation (SAIT)

Keith is the Chief Executive Officer for the South African Institute of Taxation. As part of his core duties managing the Institute, he is heavily engaged in tax at a policy, legislative and interpretative level (e.g. with National Treasury, Parliament, SARS, the Davis Tax Committee and the private sector). His role also includes presentations and participation in a wide range of South African tax and regional African tax issues for technical audiences and is repeatedly engaging with the media. Outside of the Institute, he regularly teaches at the Wits University as an adjunct professor and provides lectures at other universities. Keith is well known for his leading roles in the formulation of tax legislation at the National Treasury from 2000 to 2013.

Keith Engel has engaged in a broad range of tax issues with a special emphasis on international and transactional tax. In more recent days, he has been focusing more heavily on individual wealth issues at both a domestic and cross-border level. He has a good grasp of residency and domicile issues involving South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom. Many of his seminars relating to local and offshore trusts.

Jonathan Sprigg – Head of Fiduciary Services, International Client Solutions at Standard Bank

Head of Standard Bank’s international fiduciary service business, Jonathan has worked in the international financial services industry for 26 years managing African connected clients and investment transactions connected to Africa. Currently based in Mauritius, Jonathan has worked in Jersey, Isle of Man and London and has travelled regularly to East, West and South Africa. Jonathan has a BA (Honours) degree in Economics and Geography from the University of Portsmouth and a BSc (hons) degree in Financial Services from the University of Manchester.

Michael Giraud – Head of Fiduciary Services at Standard Bank

Michael is the Head of Fiduciary Services for Standard Bank Offshore Trust Company Jersey Limited and leads a team of highly qualified and experienced trust professionals looking after bespoke dynastic structures with a diversified asset base. He has particular experience working with structures holding residential and commercial property, large complex investment portfolios, directly held private equity and family companies.

Prior to joining Standard Bank, Michael was a director and shareholder of an award-winning independent trust group where he headed a large team responsible for establishing and managing complex dynastic structures for families with a focus on Africa, the Middle East, the UK, and North America. Previously, Michael worked in the trust and fiduciary division of a large Canadian banking institution, in both their Jersey and Cayman offices, focusing on African, North American, European and UK connected families.

Michael was educated in South Africa and England. He has a BA (Hons) in Business Studies, is a Fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants and is a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He has been named by eprivateclient as a Top 35 Under 35 on multiple occasions, as a Future Leader by City Wealth, has been recommended as a trustee by the Private Client Global Elite Directory 2020/2021 and 2022/2023, and was recently shortlisted by Citywealth as IFC trustee of the year in Jersey. Michael is also a global committee member for the STEP International Client Special Interest Group and he regularly drafts articles for industry specific publications. Michael is fluent in English and French.

Chad Phillips – Trust and Fiduciary Services Specialist – Business Development at Standard Bank

Based in Jersey, Chad is a business development trust specialist for Standard Bank’s international fiduciary services, focussing on Southern Africa and the UK. Although working with clients and intermediaries across Africa, Chad’s principal focus is on families and opportunities which are either South African or UK connected. Chad is an experienced trust professional having worked in the trust industry for over 12 years specialising on working with families with a global footprint and administering dynastic structures with complex asset classes.

Chad’s experience and qualifications are unique, having studied civil engineering and construction in South Africa and the UK, and, before working in finance, project managed medium to large scale infrastructure developments and industrial developments. Chad was educated in South Africa and was a full-time member of the South African Parachute Regiment before commencing his professional career. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Builders and Civil engineers and a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Chad is fluent in English and in spoken Afrikaans.

Sanmari Crous – Business Development Manager for Fiduciary Services at Standard Bank

Based in Jersey, Sanmari is a business development manager for Standard Bank’s international fiduciary services. A South African qualified lawyer and certified financial planning professional, Sanmari uses her legal background, expertise and experience in private client and cross-border planning for South African residents to support and grow the group’s international trust business. Before joining Standard Bank, Sanmari worked as a lawyer for an international law firm in their Jersey office, during which time she advised some of Jersey’s most prominent trust companies on South African tax and exchange control aspects.

Sanmari was recently named as one of the 2022 eprivateclient Channel Islands Top 35 Under 35. She has BCom LLB degrees from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, as well as a post-graduate diploma in financial planning from the University of Free State. She is currently studying towards a STEP Diploma in private client advising. Sanmari is fluent in English and Afrikaans.

Oscar Nzimande – Provincial Manager Offshore Banking at Standard Bank

Oscar is a Provincial Manager for Standard Bank’s International Client Solutions. His team of banking specialists cover Gauteng, Northwest, and surrounding provinces, and assist financial advisors and their clients with Standard Bank’s international personal banking solutions. With over 11 years’ experience in the banking industry, Oscar develops high performance teams that understand and meet the financial need of high net-worth individuals.

Oscar holds a BCom degree in accounting from the Northwest University and has a post-graduate diploma in Business Administration (Cum Laude). He is currently studying for a post-graduate diploma in financial planning with the University of Free State.

Samuel Thomas – Senior Wealth Manager at Standard Bank

Samuel is a Senior Wealth Manager at Standard Bank, based in Jersey. Focussing on high net-worth and ultra-high net-worth individuals across West Africa, specifically Nigeria and Ghana, Samuel has almost 10 years’ experience in the industry.

Samuel is a Chartered FCSI, and holds a BSc degree in Accounting and Finance from Swansea University. He is a fully qualified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and holds a level 4 IAD and level 6 PCIAM with The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.
