When moving from South Africa there are many considerations from a financial, tax and relocation perspective. However, the issue of taxation remains the most important and for the 5th consecutive year, South Africa’s budget review included changes aimed at increasing the tax burden on internationally mobile South Africans.
Where you have not proactively planned upfront and/or have not formally declared to SARS that you have left permanently, you risk exposing your Dutch income to South African tax when the new filing season opens in July 2022.

Jerry Botha
Jerry has over 20 years’ experience in the field of taxation, holds his own FSCA License, is a Master Reward Practitioner and serves on the Executive Board of the South African Reward Association (“SARA”), Chairs the SARA Employee Benefit Committee, and is a Certified Payroll Practitioner and Tax Practitioner. He is the managing partner of South Africa’s largest independent tax practice, enjoys presenting and is passionate about tax and international individuals. He has also authored the Lexis Nexis “Expatriate Tax” textbook, as critically acclaimed by Judge Dennis Davis.
Leo Oudshoorn
As a tax expert with about 25 years’ experience, Leo advises the internationally oriented clients in many fields: tax treaties, overarching international social security- and labour law agreements as well as applying permits for non-EU nationals to stay and work legally in the Netherlands. Leo combines his diverse expertise in a perfect mix within the European Growth Referent one stop shop.

Marisa Jacobs (BCom Marketing & Business Management) is the Managing Director at Xpatweb. Her areas of specialty include South African work permits for both individuals and employers with large groups of expatriates which require short term employment service visas, unique dispensations or special waivers of work permit conditions.
She has extensive experience in expatriate management. Her solution based methodologies extent to operating and managing a confidential payroll for various expatriate groups, having obtained various SARS tax directives and rulings, Reserve Bank clearances for expatriates and optimal banking solutions, enabling her to provide an all-inclusive mobility service, and fuels her passion for finding more streamlined solutions.
Thomas Lobban holds an LLB and LLM Tax Law degree and is a SARS registered tax practitioner in South Africa, with both practical tax and consulting experience. He has dealt with various legal conflicts of interest and moved from corporate practice to the consulting industry where he has entrenched himself within tax law, specializing in individual cross-border and crypto asset taxation.
Thomas joined Tax Consulting SA after obtaining his Masters degree, to focus on tax law and the intricacies thereof. He is a co-author of the LexisNexis Expatriate Tax textbook, and in particular its chapter on the interpretation and application of Double Taxation Agreements, which is of particular relevance to South Africans living and working abroad.
